Lifetime Achievement: Udo Kier

The Berlin & Beyond Film Festival, presented by the Goethe-Institut San Francisco, honors the legendary Udo Kier with the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award in Acting, posthumously. The tribute took place at the 30th Anniversary Berlin & Beyond Film Festival Opening Night on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 3:00 PM. 

The Lifetime Achievement Award was accepted on his behalf by “Bad Painter” co-star and producer Charlotte Taschen, in person at the Festival.

UDO KIER

Udo Kier is a true icon of global cinema, whose career spans over six decades and more than 300 films, covering every genre from independent masterpieces to mainstream action, horror, and television. He is in Andy Warhol’s groundbreaking Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein (3D), stars in Gus van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho, and appears in every Lars von Trier film. He collaborates with legends such as Rainer Fassbinder, Barry Sonnenfeld, Martin Landau, Willem Defoe, Gus van Sant, Guy Madden, Dario Argento, Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Carpenter and countless others. His work is celebrated at Cannes, Venice, Sundance, SXSW, Palm Springs, Berlin and many of his films are released by Criterion.

Kier’s influence extends far beyond the screen: he is in major television productions (Hunters with Al Pacino, Dark Winds season 4), music and pop culture (Madonna’s videos and her book “Sex”), and gaming, including Yuri in “Command & Conquer,” “Call of Duty,” and now the lead in Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele’s “OD Knock.” He voices countless iconic characters for Warner Brothers animation and is the title VO role in Schindler Space Architect, a new feature documentary narrated by Meryl Streep.

In German Cinema, he collaborated five times with Rainer Fassbinder, including The Third Generation (1979), Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980), Lili Marleen (1981), and Lola (1981). He also worked with Werner Herzog in My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done (2009) and Invincible (2001). He crossed paths with Wim Wenders over five decades, in short-form and experimental projects, the documentary Nina Hagen: Punk + Glory (1998), and the feature films, The Trick of the Light (1995) and The End of Violence (1997). He appeared in several of Christoph Maria Schlingensief’s most significant works, most notably the Germany Trilogy: “100 Years of Adolf Hitler” (1989), “The German Chainsaw Massacre” (1990), and “Terror 2000 – Germany: Island of Detention” (1992). 

A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Udo Kier is beloved by colleagues, filmmakers, and fans worldwide. The passing of this extraordinary artist has been met with enormous, moving international press coverage, memoriams and retrospectives reflecting the profound impact he continues to have on audiences and the film community. The Academy has been preparing a retrospective of his films at the Academy Museum, underscoring his unmatched contributions to cinema.
