San Francisco’s Berlin & Beyond Film Festival, America’s leading showcase of contemporary German cinema, presented by the Goethe-Institut San Francisco, will hold its 30th Anniversary Edition March 19, 2026 at San Francisco’s iconic Castro Theatre, March 20th at the Vogue Theater, March 21st at SFMOMA’s Phyllis Wattis Theater, and March 22nd and 23rd at Rialto Cinemas® Elmwood in Berkeley.
Introduction by Festival Director Sophoan Sorn: “A teenage impresario putting on the legendary piano concert in the exhilarating Köln 75. The reimagining of Shakespeare’s Richard III in a modern underworld in No Beast. So Fierce. 40 years of cathartic, thrash metal defiance in KREATOR – Hate & Hope. From the separatist tensions of A Land Within and the moral reckoning on a remote island in Amrum, to the haunting and heart-wrenching survival story in Blind at Heart and the discovery of one’s own hidden past in Red Stars Upon the Field, to the deconstruction of an artist’s ego in Bad Painter and the silent connection between unlikely buddies in the road film The Frog and the Water. These filmic stories confront and explore individual agency, intimate psychological battles, shadows of the past, and complex narratives of identity, while capturing the resilience of the human spirit.”
